Animal Advocates Petition Bunnings to Stop Sale of Glue Traps

Wildlife rescuers are calling on Bunnings, the hardware giant with a massive outlet on Euston Road in Alexandria, as well as other retailers to remove the sale of glue traps in their inventory.

Whilst the glue traps are meant to catch rodents and other pests, they can also be indiscriminately snaring other animals like micro bats, kookaburras, or blue-tongued lizards. A veterinary clinic in Sydney has also desperately saved kittens as they have been trapped in devices meant for rats.

When trapped, the rescuers said the animals could slowly die of starvation or dehydration. Some species also try to remove themselves from the glue trap by biting or gnawing through their limbs.

“These traps cause horrific pain and suffering to any animal that comes in contact with them,” the online petition to stop the sale of glue traps stated.

“A Bunnings representative said, whilst they complied with all Australian laws for selling glue traps, they were also aware of the risks associated with the products they sell, on birds and other wildlife.”

“We are asking Bunnings, Chief Operating Officer, Mr Ben McIntosh if he will help in getting Bunnings to uphold community standards for  environmental responsibility and animal welfare.”

As of press time, the petition has over 17,000 signatures.

Adrian Pearce, the general manager of merchandise for Bunnings, said that the sticky traps they sell contain glue strong enough to trap insects but not mammals and birds. These are recommended for indoor use only, which shouldn’t be exposed to wildlife. The “indoor use” label is on the packaging.

Mr Pearce also said that, unlike other retailers, they do not sell glue traps for catching rodents. The retail giant works with innovative suppliers to follow the advice of the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority and state regulatory bodies. Glue traps have been banned in Victoria, Tasmania, and the ACT.

A quick look at the stocks online indicates that Bunnings Alexandria currently has one product, The Buzz Indoor Pest Glue Trap, with advanced soft-set insect glue traps. The packaging indicates that it’s featured with a “professional strength glue” meant for capturing spiders, cockroaches, scorpions, earwigs, and “other unwanted household pests.”

The modest roof structure is assessed to have no impact on significant fabric, elements and spaces of the stie,” Urbis stated in an assessment report on behalf of the applicant.

Convenience Store, Delivery App Make RAT Kits More Accessible to Redfern Locals

A convenience store and a grocery delivery service app have made COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test kits more accessible to Redfern locals.

With rapid antigen test (RAT) kits in short supply, Redfern Convenience Store and grocery delivery app SEND have come to the rescue by providing a convenient way to access this highly in-demand commodity.

Redfern Convenience Store began selling rapid antigen test kits on 13 January and despite limiting an individual’s allowed purchase to a maximum of two boxes, the test kits  sold out very quickly. But fret not; the store already replenished their stock with the fresh arrival of RAT tests.

On 18 January 2022, they announced that rapid antigen tests have arrived and customers who have pre-ordered online need not wait for notification as they can personally pick up their orders at the store. However, those who prefer to have the kits delivered to them can expect their orders to arrive soon.

“When I realised there was a shortage of the rapid antigen tests, I had to step in and help out our community,” shop owner, Hazem Sedda. said in their social media post.

“Throughout my 20 years in this store we have seen many high demand products including toilet paper and hand sanitizer earlier in the pandemic and we were successful in securing them for our customers. It always makes me feel proud and happy when I see the smiles of our customers when they get the products that they need and they can’t find anywhere else.”

The next shipment of RAT kits is expected to arrive on 25 or 26 January 2022. To pre-order a rapid antigen testing kit, click this link.

Grocery delivery app, SEND, is also stocking RAT kits to serve as another option to those having difficulty finding self-test kits to buy. Customers can order a two-pack rapid antigen test kit for $21 through the SEND app and have them delivered to their doorstep in 10 minutes for a delivery fee of $3.

Fonz Moto Redfern Shifts Gears, Has Milestone Year Despite Lockdowns

Redfern e-bike store Fonz Moto successfully shifted gears to overcome lockdown challenges and ended 2021 with a milestone achievement — selling out the entire NKD e-Bike inventory at its Redfern micro-factory despite the challenging business climate!

Fonz Moto, which launched its first models in 2014, originally planned to move its e-bike production to South Australia in early 2020. However, COVID-19 forced its owner, Michelle Nazzari, to reassess her business plan. With pandemic restrictions in place, supply chain challenges and distribution issues were sure to greatly impact the business.

So, Michelle decided to turn its Redfern headquarters into an “urban micro-factory,” ramping up their partnership with local suppliers to lessen any problems with sourcing the lithium-ion cells and chips used for their motorbike battery packs.

As a result, Fonz Moto was able to improve its production, completed 100 NKD e-bikes from its small warehouse/store in Redfern. By December 2021, every NKD from the lot was sold!

At the same time, Fonz Moto is also patting its back as its business can still reinforce an all-Australian philosophy. NKD e-bikes, its flagship product, has already received its ‘Proudly Australian-Made’ certification.

The Redfern facility can complete about 20 e-bikes in a month but Michelle said they are looking for a bigger venue closer to their headquarters as part of their expansion plans.

“We are privileged to be headquartered within Redfern, a culturally rich and diverse place with strong community ties. The Gadigal People of the Eora Nation are the traditional custodians of the land on which we are now located. We pay our respects to Indigenous Elders, past, present and emerging and dream of a shared future together.”

Soon! Redfern Mural of First Female Aussie Rugby League Player Maggie Moloney

Esteemed street artist Sharon Billinge will create a mural of Maggie Moloney, the country’s first female rugby league player, a former resident of Redfern.

Maggie used to live at the corner of James and Morehead streets and worked in the tailoring department of David Jones on Marlborough Street.

Her mural, which will be 4 metres x 3.5 metres in size, will decorate the back of the St Vincent de Paul site along Cleveland Street. It will join the mural of Taleena Simon of the Sydney Roosters.

According to the City of Sydney, this latest creative project is for the “increased visibility and understanding of the history, stories, and character of the city.” It’s also a recognition of the contribution of the First Nations community in Redfern as the pioneers of women’s rugby.

Who is Maggie Moloney?

In September 1921, a 15-year-old girl led the Metropolitan 21 to victory at the first women’s match that took place during a shortened NSWRL men’s season. She was none other than the younger sister of Souths player Mick Moloney, Maggie.

Maggie wowed a crowd of over 20,000 spectators at the Agricultural Ground, with the press describing her blistering performance “like a radiant racehorse.” She also impressed the people when she clinched a win during a splint race, the pre-game entertainment.

Her win came at a time when rugby was deemed too “rough for girls” but about 50 female rugby players fought for a chance to show that they could also play the game. The men’s rugby league in Australia was nearing two decades by then and the decision to have the girls play became a public debate.

Meanwhile, Moloney’s mural unveiling was supposed to coincide with the 100th year of the women’s rugby league in 2021 but plans were pushed back due to the pandemic crisis.

Joans of Marc | Providing a Space for the Wine Industry’s Marginalised

Joans of Marc, a wine delivery business run by two women, promotes diversity whilst sharing part of the profit to charities like Mudgin-Gal, an Aboriginal women’s centre in Redfern.

Alysha Moscatt and Lucy Kendall have been making wine in West Gippsland under the label AlleVare, apart from working with other nearby vineyards. However, the duo noticed how underrepresented women are – which make up more than a third of the wine industry – in wine events.

In an industry that traditionally features male winemakers, Joans of Marc aims to make a difference by expanding the wine industry representation and encouraging retailers and wine event organisers to reach out to these underrepresented talents.

“When the gate-keepers actively and willingly open the doors to human beings who haven’t been well-represented in our industry (POC, women, queer folks and other minorities for instance) we stand a chance of diversifying who drinks, pours and makes it,” their social media post said.

“Diversity isn’t just a question of warm fuzzies (which we’re into in case anyone was asking), it’s also about helping our industry mature into all that it can be. We want winemaking to celebrate and actively seek out talent across the human spectrum.”

In establishing the business, Alysha and Lucy got a little help from fellow winemakers Clare Burder (Eminence Wines) and Tessa Brown (Vignerons Schmölzer and Brown). For each release, Joans of Marc sells a new 6-pack set of wines created by women and underrepresented groups and a portion of the proceeds go to a selected charity.

Established in 2020, Joans of Marc partly owes its name to a French heroine named Joan of Arc and partly to a French term, Marc, which is what is left of the grapes after the juice is pressed off to create wine.

One of their releases featured wines curated by Women and Revolution which includes a selection of wines created by women but bear a man’s name on each label. The aim is to change the assumption that comes with the label and to focus on the “unseen women” who also deserve to get their fair share of the credit.

The pack includes wines from Europe: 2017 Serge Dagueneau & Filles La Centenaire, 2018 Breuer-Mehrlein-Lundén Riesling Venture Trocken, 2018 Matías I Torres / Victoria Torres Pecis Negramoll Piezas N1, 2019 Gianfranco Alessandria Barbera d’Alba, 2020 Piero Gatti Moscato and 2020 Domaine Collotte Aligoté.

Proceeds from the sale of this wine pack will be donated to Mudgin-Gal Women’s Centre in Redfern. Mudgin-Gal meaning ‘Women’s Place’ is an Aboriginal organisation established in1992 and run and staffed by Aboriginal women. Mudgin-Gal Women’s Centre provides shelter to vulnerable women as well as skills-based programs particularly to women who aspire to be leaders in their own communities.

Health Survey Covering Key Sectors of Waterloo and Redfern Underway

The University of New South Wales is running a study on the health needs of residents to help plan and deliver vital health services for selected sectors of the Waterloo or Redfern community.

In line with this study, the experts, led by Dr Christopher Standen, are taking a survey to gather data on what the residents may need.

Information provided will be stored in UNSW’s platform for at least 25 years.

“We will keep your information private. We will not tell anybody your name or where you live. No one will know it was you who took part. We will write about what we find out. If you want, we will send you a summary,” Dr Standen and his team said.

The survey is open to Waterloo or Redfern social housing dwellers who are aged over 18 and are proficient in the English language.

Dr Standen is an expert on urban development, health equity, and health impact assessment. In 2020, he also conducted a study on the Waterloo housing estate redevelopment for the Healthy Urban Environments (HUE) Collaboratory, with a focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and older adult residents, whom have been identified as potentially more at risk.

Meanwhile, survey participants $25 EFTPOS or Visa gift card if they complete the task, which will likely take 20 minutes. Participants, however, are under no obligation to commit to completing the survey and may opt out if they want to.
