New Bridge Road Cycleway Delivers Safer Ride Between Glebe and the City

A 1.2-kilometre upgraded cycleway along Bridge Road in Glebe has been completed, giving riders a safer and more permanent connection between the Inner West and the city, including direct access to the new Sydney Fish Market.

Construction began in May 2025 and work wrapped up in June 2026, following a pop-up cycleway trial that began in 2021 and saw ridership double over the following three years.

From pop-up to permanent

The pop-up cycleway was always intended as a trial. Transport for NSW put it to the community in 2021, drawing more than 1,000 survey responses from local residents.

The feedback was clear enough that a decision was made in 2022 to make it permanent and upgrade it properly.

By May 2025, when construction crews moved in, the route was already carrying around 500 trips a day on average. Usage had roughly doubled between 2021 and 2024, and further growth is expected now that the upgraded infrastructure is in place.

What has been built

The upgraded cycleway runs the full length of Bridge Road and includes extended, more durable concrete barriers that better separate riders from moving traffic.

Two new raised pedestrian crossings near Cross Street and Woolley Street improve safety for people on foot, while a freshly resurfaced road along the entire route makes the ride smoother and quieter.

New kerb ramps improve access for prams and bicycles at intersections, and new signage runs the full length of the route. The westbound bus stop opposite Barr Street has been upgraded, and the concrete median near Cross Street has been removed.

Footpaths and gutters along the corridor have also been repaired, and Transport for NSW previously reduced the speed limit on Bridge Road from 60 to 40 kilometres per hour.

A trial underway at key intersections

With the main works complete, Transport for NSW is now trialling shorter right-turn bays at the intersections with Glebe Point Road and Ross Street. If the trial succeeds, the changes will be made permanent, allowing the cycleway barrier to extend further at those points.

Connecting Glebe to the city

Bridge Road connects Glebe to the Broadway precinct and on toward the CBD, making it one of the most direct cycling routes from the inner west for people commuting or heading to Pyrmont, the new Sydney Fish Market or the city centre.

The cycleway links with existing active transport routes on both ends and is part of a wider network of cycling infrastructure across inner Sydney.
