Chinatown Sydney in Haymarket Begins $44 Million Revitalisation

Chinatown Sydney is entering a new chapter as the City of Sydney moves ahead with a multi-million-dollar upgrade of Dixon Street in Haymarket, aiming to protect its heritage while bringing fresh life to one of the city’s most recognisable cultural hubs.

Historic Gates Restored

The project’s first milestone was the completion of restoration work on the Chinatown gates, originally built in 1980. Crews repaired, repainted and retiled the landmark, replacing the original concrete lion statues with granite versions.

The upgrade forms part of a $44 million revitalisation package for Haymarket, designed to improve public spaces and preserve the area’s cultural identity.

Plans for Dixon Street

Next, attention will turn to Dixon Street South, which is owned by the City of Sydney. Planned works include creative lighting installations, new seating and street furniture, refreshed paving with cultural motifs, and upgraded electrical infrastructure to support community events such as the Sydney Lunar Festival.

Workers will manage trees to balance shade and open sky, and they will retain or enhance heritage details. They plan to start work in August 2025 and finish in early 2027, pausing construction during major festivals to minimise disruption.

Balancing Heritage and Change

Community consultation over the past three years shaped the plans, with locals calling for better lighting, safer spaces, and stronger support for markets and events. Academics and heritage advocates stress the importance of protecting the precinct’s history and warn that without careful planning, the area could lose parts of its unique character.

While the upgrade is expected to boost foot traffic and economic activity, there are concerns that over-commercialisation could affect the authenticity of the area.

Haymarket’s Role in Sydney’s Cultural Life

Haymarket has been a meeting place for Chinese Australians since the late 19th century, growing into a vibrant centre for food, trade and community celebrations. The revitalisation aims to ensure Dixon Street remains a place where cultural traditions can continue alongside new business opportunities.

The City is offering matched-funding grants for shopfront upgrades and plans to work with other landowners on Dixon Street’s northern section.
